New Gas Connections SA and QLD

Service Connection Request SA and QLD (SCR)

FAQs

The basic connection service comprises the provision of a new connection between AGN’s distribution pipeline and a retail customer’s premises where there is minimal or no extension or augmentation of the network, and:

  • the new connection is required to supply gas to a single residential home on the retail customer’s premises;
  • there are no other homes, buildings or installations on the customer’s premises which consume gas or require a gas connection;
  • AGN estimates or expects that the retail customer’s consumption of gas, at or through the new connection, will be less than or equal to 440 megajoules of gas per hour under normal conditions; and
  • the pressure of gas at the outlet of the new gas meter is not required to exceed 2.75 kPa.

The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) updated the rules for new gas connections to scheme and nominated non-scheme pipelines from 1 October 2026, which included the introduction of new connection charges payable by retail customers for basic new connections.

However, for the Wide Bay network (including Maryborough, Bundaberg and Hervey Bay), which is the only nominated non-scheme pipeline in Queensland, the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) has granted an exemption to the new rules (and new charges).

In South Australia, the State Government passed the National Gas (South Australia) (Application of Rule) Amendment legislation which suspended application of the AEMC's upfront connection charge rule change until further notice by the Minister for Energy.

If your connection does not meet the above criteria, it may be considered a non-basic connection. In these cases, AGN will assess your requirements and provide a tailored quote for the new connection based on the work needed.

For non-basic connections, any applicable charge is by quotation and generally covers the cost of connecting the property to AGN's gas distribution network. Depending on the connection, this may include:

  • Service line installation
  • Meter installation
  • Network connection works

Yes. Any connection charge payable to AGN only covers AGN's network connection service.

Regardless of whether the new connection is a basic or non-basic connection, other costs for a customer may include:

  • Internal plumbing works
  • Gas appliance purchase and installation
  • Site preparation
  • Builder or contractor costs

A no access charge may apply where AGN attends the property to undertake connection works but is unable to complete the work because access is unavailable or the site is not ready for connection.

If a return visit is required, additional charges may apply in accordance with AGN’s applicable connection terms and charges.

Customers should ensure the site meets the relevant site readiness requirements before booking connection works.

AGN is responsible for gas network connections and connection charges.

Energy retailers are responsible for gas supply, retail contracts, billing and account management.

The 20 business day turnaround commences when the site is confirmed as ready as per the site readiness checklists at the link below:

Builders and Developer Information
