How servicing your gas heater can save you hundreds

How servicing your gas heater can save you hundreds

A heater service helps keep things running smoothly. It may even trim your energy bills while keeping your home cosy through the colder months. With regular maintenance, your heater is more likely to perform reliably all winter. If it’s been a while since your last check-up, consider booking a licensed gas fitter. To find one, use our locator: Find a gas appliance fitter.

Disclaimer: Australian Gas Networks provides the locator for general information only. We do not endorse or recommend any gas appliance fitter listed, and we are not responsible for their workmanship, advice, acts or omissions. Please make your own enquiries and ensure any contractor is appropriately licensed for your state or territory.

Why regular gas heater servicing matters

A well-maintained heater runs more smoothly and uses less gas. A technician will clean and adjust the burners for consistent heat, calibrate the thermostat so it does not overwork, and confirm vents and airflow are clear for improved efficiency and even warmth throughout your home.

Even small issues – like a partially blocked burner or misaligned gas valve – can quietly drive up energy use which could result in higher bills and cold spots in rooms. For more ways to keep winter bills under control, see AGN’s guide: (energy.gov.au)

How servicing helps you save on energy costs

Clean components burn fuel more effectively. When burners, filters and fans are free of dust and debris, the heater does not need to work as hard. Correct gas pressure also helps the system use only the fuel it needs. Heating makes up a large share of a typical home’s energy costs, around one third, so even modest efficiency gains can add up over a year. See Energy Victoria’s guidance on heating and cooling discounts.

Tip:  Keep a recent gas bill and compare usage after your service. If usage drops and your home feels warmer at the same settings, the service is doing its job.

Extend the lifespan of your gas heater

Servicing removes soot and build-up that can corrode internal parts over time. It also picks up early warning signs such as a weak pilot light or a corroded heat exchanger before they become expensive problems. Servicing regularly can also help with warranty conditions.

Safety first

Servicing gives you confidence your heater is running as it should. A licensed technician will check for leaks, test for carbon monoxide, make sure components and wiring are in good condition, and confirm ventilation is adequate for safe operation. It’s a simple way to enjoy peace of mind before winter sets in. Read Energy Safe Victoria’s advice: Is your gas heater safe? and Heating your home with gas. Rebates available for heating upgrades

AGN runs rebates and promotions in select states and change from time to time. Current offers include cash back for energy-efficient natural gas hot water and heating appliances. Offers are valid in South Australia and select areas of New South Wales and Queensland, with further terms and conditions applying.

For more information, visit our rebates and promotions page (select your state to see current offers and T&C) or call 1300 001 001 – option 7. Some local promotions may also support safety checks, so it’s worth checking your state’s page regularly.

Note: AGN rebates are no longer available in Victoria due to State Government restrictions.

How often should you service your gas heater

  • Every two years is a good rule of thumb and is mandatory for rental properties in Victoria.
  • Your service technician may recommend annual servicing under certain conditions.

Best timing: Book before winter so your heater is performing at its best when you need it most. Verify your tradesperson with the Victorian Building Authority search. People experiencing financial hardship or vulnerable circumstances can apply for appliance safety checks and servicing through AGN’s Priority Services Program. T&C apply.
